●Chinese govt to support President Zardari’s plan to build 12 small and medium sized hydropower dams

Salman Faruqui, who is currently visiting China, underlined that President Asif Ali Zardari attached highest importance to cooperation between Pakistan and China in the areas of small and medium sized dams, water conservancy, hybrid seed development, climate change and ways to deal with melting glaciers in the mountains joining China with Pakistan and other countries of South Asia.

To overcome power shortage, the government has allocated Rs 154.7 billion, including foreign aid amounting to Rs 19.3 billion, for the energy sector in the budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year, the budget document revealed. The government has allocated Rs 139.306 billion, including Rs 14.885 billion of foreign aid, for the Water and Power Development Authority.

●Work on Tarbela's fourth extension underway

The feasibility study of the Tarbela fourth extension hydro-project has been completed and it will add an additional electricity of 960 MW in the national system to strengthen the economy and enhance hydro generation project. The total power potential of the project was 2,100 MW originally which was enhanced to 3,478 MW and now will be further enhancement to 4438 MW with the completion of Tarbela fourth Extension Project.
