Puri, in the state of Orissa, is one of the holy cities of India. It is a religious place where devout Hindus come to worship Lord Jagannath in the Jagannath Temple, and to do ablution on the beach.

I was wandering near the beach one day and found the cremation ground. The location of the cremation ground was rather unique by western or Japanese standards. It was located on the same street where, side by side, lots of souvenir shops are selling the usual trinkets, sweets, etc. for tourists!

As you will see in one of the photos, there is a beach in front and the usual clamor of Indian tourists.

Moreover, the crematory is located between two streets, and local people sometimes cross the crematory ground as a shortcut.

I was uneasy about taking photos at first, not knowing how people would react. However, people just did not care. At one point, unasked, a man in charge of the cremation asked everyone around to step back so that I could take a photo!

オリッサ州に位置するプリーは、インド4大聖地の一つだ。ジャガナート寺院に祀られた、宇宙の神ジャガナートを礼拝するためにインド中から敬虔なヒンズー教徒が集まる。そして皆ビーチで沐浴するのだ。

そんなプリーの町を歩いていたある日、火葬場に出くわした。それは、日本では考えられないような場所にあった。旅行者に土産やお菓子を売る店が並ぶ通りにあり、土産物店とは目と鼻の先の距離だったのだ。

写真をご覧になれば分かるとおり、火葬場の前にはビーチが広がっていて、多くのインド人観光客が服のまま沐浴し、歓喜の声を上げている。

また、この火葬場は二つの通りにはさまれていて、道を急ぐ地元の人たちは、近道として火葬場を通り抜けることもあった。

写真を撮り始めた最初は、火葬の最中を撮影するということに、皆どのような反応を示すだろうかと不安だっが、結局だれも何ら気にしていないことがわかった。それどころか、撮影の最中に、火葬の責任者らしき男性が、私が「いい写真」を撮れるようにと、皆に少し後ろへ下がるように指示してくれたりした。
